3249, The Year of Desperation

Cicarenthor Border

Eathevall, Goranin

“I worry this plan might work too well. What shall we do if Zero requests we accompany him to the castle?” Astrid wrung her hands as she glanced down the path once more. Too afraid to wait for his passing in the village, Astrid convinced Emora to wait along the border path that led from Eathevall to Cicarenthor. In truth, Astrid had never left the confines of the region of Eathevall, and Emora suspected that was thanks to Simorana’s tales of what waited outside its borders. Emora despised the people of Cicarenthor, but it would be easier to catch the king there than farther down the road.

“He is a kind man, but I doubt he will do that,” Emora said. “He is returning from—”

“There he is!” Astrid said and grabbed Emora’s arm.

The two had left Simorana’s home as planned and took up residence in their own, well protected by Emora whose own magical ability strengthened by the day. Simorana’s binding spell was no match for the power that filled Emora’s veins, but just as she had fooled the mage into believing her brainwashing had worked, Emora let Simorana believe her magic had been bound so she might receive the gift of perpetual life promised in exchange.

Emora quite missed Lucifer, but there was no room for keeping a horse at their new home. For some time, they happily built their lives, planned for the future, wished, and hoped to see Reven again, but above all, they tracked Eiagan and the royal family, waiting for the right moment to reveal Emora’s true identity. That, however, had proven to be a difficult task.

The people rebelled against Eiagan from the moment she took the throne, though Emora could see no reason why they should. Far kinder than Icluedian, Eiagan gave more than she received. That, Emora suspected, was likely the reason the men in Cicarenthor despised her. After lowering their wages and redistributing sovereign funds to those in need, Eiagan made many enemies amongst the aristocrats.

“Do not leap in front of the caravan. You might be killed on sight,” Astrid said.

Emora pursed her lips. She was not so foolish as to do that, but she could pretend as well as any girl. She screamed, then darted from the cover of the forest, across the road. She glanced over her shoulder as if she were running from something, then fell upon the icy path with feigned exhaustion. As suspected, the men surged forward to aid her—Zero at their lead.

“Let me help you,” Zero said when his horse came to a stop beside her. He slid from the saddle and offered his hand, lifted Emora to her feet, and allowed her to use his arm to steady her.

“King Zero?” Emora gasped. “I… I was waiting to see you. I wished for a counsel with you, but was attacked by…” She glanced over her shoulder again, feigning fear enough to sell her story. “A dog of some sort. Big and… hungry.”

“Fear not.
